The Canteen//2008
O Cantil
O Cantil
The Canteen has as its starting point a quite specific reading of "The exception and the rule" by Bertolt Brecht, where the word is suppressed so that the rest can be emphasized and in order to refunctionalize the actor's work through the exercise of demonstration and manipulation. It is, therefore, about a journey in undefined time and space. Two men follow a course pursuing something. For the master, the journey is urgent and terrifying, for the vassal it's nothing but the means for his livelihood. Between the two of them, they establish a relationship that range from the extremes of total mistrust to pure subservience, a relationship that is transfigured by the absence/presence of the canteen.
Conception In "The Canteen", the intention is to create a double of the manipulation between the actors, reflecting the relation of oppression between the characters of the master and the vassal in the condensed figures of the actor-puppet and the actor-puppeteer. We emphasize the demonstration over the conventional form of acting or the psychological composition. The situation turns into text, the characters are in the background, the actors demonstrate how the gestures and actions would be like. These actions and gestures are not experienced, but rather revealed through examination, repetition and exposition in a plastic and gestural collective, apart from the spoken text.
